William "Robby" Robertson
Passed away 9/29/07.
Hal Lebovitz,
legendary
sports writer died on October 18, 2006 at
age 89. He
was one of the most influential sports
writes in
Cleveland’s
history for more than 60 years.
Hal wrote for the Cleveland News, The Plain
Dealer, and The Lake County News Herald.
He was
inducted into the writers’ wing of the
Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000, one of 11
Halls of Fame in which he is enshrined.
Hal
Lebovtiz loved kids and the game of baseball
and was a good friend of the Cleveland
Baseball Federation.
His philosophy of youth sports and the way
it should be played is the philosophy of CBF.
We will always respect Hal.
Alva “Ted” Bonda
passed
away on October 22, 2006 at age 88. He
graduated from
Glenville
High
School
and began
his career as a shoe store clerk and a
parking lot attendant.
He formed a partnership with Howard
Metzenbaum, setting up the first paid
airport parking lot at
Cleveland
Hopkins
International
Airport,
now known as APCOA, Inc., the worlds largest
parking company.
He lacked
the money to attend college, yet served as
president of the Cleveland School Board and
chairman of the Ohio Board of Regents.
Bonda’s
best-known civic activity was with the
Indians in the 1970s when the worry was that
the baseball club would move to another
city. He
led a group that bought the team.
He also hired Frank Robinson as the major
leagues’ first black manager.
He also designated John Adams as the team
drummer with an assigned bleacher seat.
A product
of Depression-Era poverty, he became a
leader in business, education and sports.
He was a strong champion of Cleveland, its
youth and its sports
